I found myself opening my eyes again but this time it was harder and I knew this time was real because I felt the pain. I moaned. I heard a voice soon after.
"Rachel? Come on wake up." It was Nick. His voice was soft and I knew he was crying. I opened my eyes most of the way, the light hurt my eyes so I kept my eyes partly shut. I realized I couldn't talk and I got scared. Nick saw that and quickly spoke.
"It's ok. Don't panic, it is just a tube to help you breath." and he took my hand. I relaxed and just looked at him. "I'm going to get the nurse. I will be right back....ok?" He asked. I nodded even though I wanted him to never leave my sight again. But he soon returned with a nurse in toe.
"Welcome back Rachel." She said warmly. "We are going to take this out to see if you can breath on your own." After a little maneuvering the tube came out and my mouth closed and I now realized that my jaw hurt. 'Great' I thought 'could this be any worse?' "I'll get the doctor in here to look you over and make sure you are okay." She said still smiling and left.
Nick looked at me and smiled a little. "I missed you." I smiled half-heartedly.
"How long was I out?" I asked nick barely above a whisper. Boy did it hurt to talk.
"About 4 days. The doctors weren't sure if you were going to make it in the beginning." Nick said sadly.
I looked at him in the eyes and whispered to him. "But I did make it."
The nurse had put more meds in the IV so basically I was numb everywhere except my face. But that even hurt like a bitch. I saw the doctor walk in and my attention went to him. He looked at me and smiled.
"Well since you woke up it looks like you will make it but with some therapy to help heal and get back to normal. Let me tell you what happened." He paused and looked at his chart. "Ok you suffered a gunshot wound to your right chest area. The bullet punctured your lung and gave you internal bleeding. On the positive side the bullet when straight through so we didn't have to look for the bullet to get it out. Now your lung will heal with time and you will have to take it easy for a few months." The doctor said and I nodded.
"As for your other injuries, as you know you were beaten pretty badly, you have a concussion a long with the run of the mill bumps and bruises BUT he did hit your left kidney so that is bruised. But like the rest of you it will heal with time and medication. As I was saying before, you will need therapy treatments for your lung but you will heal if not to new, really damn close. You're lucky. I have to go. I will send the nurse in later with your medication." He said then left. Nick and I were alone again.
"What time is it?" I hoarsely whispered to Nick still really disoriented.
"Just after 9pm." He said.
"Where is everyone?" I asked confused.
"They went home sweetie. I told them to go get some rest since we didn't know when you would wake up." He said gripping my hand he had never took away from mine since he came back with the nurse.
"Oh." I whispered. I then remembered about Nick's back. "How are you? How is your back?" I asked
"It is ok. It surprised me that they didn't need stitches...they used this new glue type thing... it has less scarring so they think if there is any scaring it will be minimal." (AN: I dunno if that stuff exists but in my story it does.)
"That's good." I whispered. After a moments pause I whispered to Nick "Why were you crying?" Nick looked at me shocked. Since he washed his face be fore I woke up to get rid of the tearstains.
"How did you know that?...I" he said trying to figure it out.
"It is hard to explain Nicky. But why were you?" I whispered again. He sat down in the chair that was still next to my bed and looked back into my eyes.
"Because it should be me lying in this bed right now. That bullet was meant for me. Why did you push me out of the way?" He asked and I could tell he was about to cry again.
Taking a breath and ignoring the pain in my thought I tried to speak loud enough for him to here.
"Because Nick, I love you and I couldn't bare to see you hurt again." I took another breath. "Besides if that bullet did hit you, you would have died and I couldn't let that happen. I can't live with out you." Then I cracked a small smile. "And I guess the rest of the female world would fall apart too."
"Yea I guess they would, wouldn't they!" Nick said trying to make me laugh. I tried not to but I couldn't hold it in.
"Gee thanks Carter!" I rolled my eyes laughing, "Just shows how much you care."
"Welcome!" He said with a goofy grin. Then the nurse came in with my meds.
"Hi Rachel. How are you feeling?" She asked smiling. Which brought attention back to my body. It hurt like hell.
"Well my body kinda hurts." I said not really sure where to start.
"Ok. This will make you feel better but it will also make you sleep." She said and I nodded. She injected the meds in to the IV line I had in my arm and then she smiled and left. The meds worked fast cause I started to drift off.
"I'll go so you can sleep." Nick whispered standing up.
"No, please stay." I whispered and then yawned. "I don't want to be alone."
"Ok. I won't go anywhere. Just sleep." Nick said and then bent down to kiss my forehead. I fell asleep right after.
