A few days later Nick received a letter from Brian. It was delivered by a slave who works for the mail office. It wasn't put in the regular mail. Oh no no cause then Jahed would find out about it and Nick would be beaten. After the mail was delivered to Jehed the slave left the letter for Nick in the hedges where he saw Nick working many times. It was a risk but the mail slave did it. Sure enough Nick found it and put it in his pocket. He would have to wait until he went to bed to read it.
In bed that night Nick took the letter out of his dirty pants and opened it. The dirt on his hands smudged on to the folded letter. He opened the letter making sure not to smudge the writing. He moved to the window of his small room to read by the moonlight since he was given no light.
Dear Nick,
If you are reading this then that's one mission that has succeeded. The next is to get you out of there. Amir, my master, is going out on 8/6 for the day and that only leaves me with his wife, who sleeps a lot from an illness. I just hope you get this before I get there so you can be ready to leave. I will come for you from the back through the small woods that are in the back of Jahed's farm there is an old shed there. I once had to retrieve wood from back there that's how I know it is there. That's where I will be. I will come in the early morning since that is when Amir leaves. From what I heard, he is friends' with Jahed and they are heading out together for a bit that morning on 8/6. Be well rested because it will be along day of running. Raven, which is the code name for one of the men from the resistance, is going to take us out of here and try to get us to Long Island. I hope you get this in time. I love you bro.
-Brian
Nick thought to himself, '8/6 that's tomorrow!' He wanted to see Brian again so badly but what if he got caught? He could be killed. 'Then again this is the only way I may ever get to see my family and friends again. What if they're already on Long Island waiting for me?!' he thought. That's when he decided that he would leave. Since he woke up early everyday anyway he knew it wouldn't be a problem to be up a bit earlier. He laid down on the thing they gave him that was supposed to be a bed when in reality it was a blanket on top of hey. He fell asleep rather quickly from his long day.
...............................
Nick was up before the sun. He grabbed what was left that was his. A picture of his family that used to be in his wallet, the few items of clothing that he had and a necklace that he was able to hide all this time. The necklace was given to him by his little brother on his last birthday before he became a slave. It was a gold shark and on the back it said "Bite me, love Aaron" Nick smiled and wondered if his bro was doing ok. Nick frowned, he wondered if his brother was alive. He came out of his thoughts and put what little he had in to an old backpack and crawled out the small window in his room. He went unseen to the back woods but it would only be a matter of 2 hours when Jahed's wife got up to notice that he was missing. Jehed had left before. That is what woke Nick up in the first place. He reached the woods and looked for the shed. Ten minutes later he saw it and ran to it wanting to see his best friend again.
He walked in the shed to discover that Brian wasn't there yet. Nick frowned. 'I am probably early.' He said to himself. So he sat and waited. 'What if Brian got caught? That will mean I will get caught!' Nick started to get worried.
A few minutes later the door opened and Nick jumped back. But soon relaxed.
"Brian!" He exclaimed and gave him a hug. "I thought you got caught."
"I almost did. But I am here now." Brian said pulling away from Nick. He smiled. "I got some good news for you."
"What?" Nick said excited. It had been so long since he heard something good.
"Hey Raven come in here!" Brian said to the person out side. Raven came in and Nick gasped at who it was.
"Oh my God!" He smiled. "I can't believe it's you!"
